Role

Role (aka Edward Lund)

Born in San Francisco, raised in Yuma Arizona and spent many summers in my cousin’s brownstone in Brooklyn, I was immersed in the sounds of Santana, Tito Puente and of all manners of Latin music. I discovered Grandmaster Flash and devoured Tommy Boy cassettes.

The desert and Southern California introduced skateboarding and punk rock. The SST sound took me away from hip hop and eventually led me back to the East as a Sonic Youth devotee.
Electronic music came subliminally in those formative years; there was always a drum machine/synth tucked into the sounds I loved.
I started playing my band years in the early 90′s as a screamer for Chuck Wagon in Atlanta, then when I got a Jazzmaster, started playing guitar and singing for Mercy Seat, The Black Reds, Cosmic Electric and then Double Nickels.
In the late 90′s I discovered the Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk. Totally blown away. They made my Art Noise/Garage Rock sounds sound so limiting and nostalgic. This was the sound of the future.
In the late 00′s, I was over having to deal with band drama and wanted to make music that I really could do all by myself. I knew that would be the only way to really grow the sound.
I created 85Lives in 2008 as a blog label, and then role came about. It seemed an ideal name at that time, having one role as a father, another as an employee and another as a producer of music to make you move and think.
The site I use to showcase my sounds the most are roleatl.tumblr.com; It links to soundcloud.com/scarrzz and role.bandcamp.com.
I use twitter and FB to share my sounds; twitter has worked best, hit me up, @85lives.
I’m currently really, really into house music. Deep, French, Progressive and Tech. I still love chillwave but my guitar cache is thin and my synth stash is growing. I don’t see that trend reversing anytime but hey, give me a tuba and I’ll get you a rhythm. I make music, that’s what I do.
